Border Crossings ‒ International Conference 2018 Call for Papers
5 February 2018

The Intercultural Confluences Research Centre of the Department of Humanities, Faculty of Economics, Socio-Human Sciences and Engineering, Miercurea Ciuc, Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania, Romania, organizes the English language International Conference Border Crossings in the Miercurea Ciuc campus of the university on 20-21 April, 2018. Extended deadline for submissions: 10 February 2018

In the past decades, along various processes of globalization, cross-cultural communication and transnational mobility, the dynamics of border constitution and dissolution has emerged as a socio-cultural phenomenon attracting increasing attention in diverse scientific domains. In his seminal essay “What is a Border?” the French philosopher Étienne Balibar reflects on the malleability of the concept of border: “The idea of a simple definition of what constitutes a border is, by definition, absurd: to mark out a border is, precisely, to define a territory, to delimit it, and so to register the identity of that territory, or confer one upon it. Conversely, however, to define and identify in general is nothing other than to trace a border, to assign boundaries or borders (in Greek, horos; in Latin, finis or terminus; in German, Grenze; in French, borne). The theorist who attempts to define what a border is is in danger of going round in circles, as the very representation of the border is the precondition for any definition” (In: Politics and the Other Scene. London‒New York: Verso, 2002. 76).

The transgressability of borders, conjointly with the reconsolidation of boundaries, is to be conceived not only in political terms, but also at the level of constantly reconfiguring intercultural and interlingual contacts. The satellite terms and discourses related to border and border crossing, from James Clifford’s border zone, through Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s de- and reterritorialization, to Jacques Derrida’s open borders, have inspired a multitude of research directions, cross-fertilizing diverse disciplinary fields. The present conference addresses scholars of Literary History, Literary Theory, Cultural Studies, Translation Studies, Discourse Analysis, Pragmatics, Text Linguistics, Cross-Linguistic Analysis, and Film and Media Studies, and invites them to share their findings in issues related to border concepts in today’s discursive practices, to rethink cultural, literary, linguistic and media phenomena from the perspective of the changing institutions, functions and meanings of borders.

We invite lectures on topics related but not restricted to:

- the changing meanings and functions of borders, redefining boundaries;

- material, symbolic and discursive dimensions of borders;

- culture and identity across borders;

- intercultural transfers;

- liminal spaces;

- border and difference, border and otherness;
